Indian Wildlife in the Corbett National Park
Tigers and Leopards.
We saw plenty of tiger and leopard footprints each day; alas we did not see the tiger or leopard in person.
We had two close encounters with a tiger.
Our first was when we came upon a troupe of Rhesus monkeys who were barking an alarm as they could see a tiger, just off the road from where we were. One of the monkeys was crying, almost a human whimper, our guide said, it was frightened of the tiger. We looked hard and long, moved our vehicles up and down the road, but alas the tiger stayed out of site.
Our second encounter was in our camp, just off the Corbett National Park boundary when one of the camp men came in at 7pm, when it was pitch black, saying he had seen a tiger by the water tank. If we accompanied him on foot we could see if we could find it. We declined the offer.
Deer or Antelope.
We saw plenty of spotted deer or Cheetal, also the large Sambor Deer (roughly the equivalent of the red deer in Britain) and there were plenty of Muntjac or Barking Deer. The total Corbett Park deer population is estimated at just under 60,000.
Indian Wild Pig
These were another regular siting and brought us much delight. On one occasion we found one in a muddy wallow thoroughly enjoying himself rubbing mud all over his body.
Indian Porcupine
We saw plenty of evidence, left by the porcupine, from footprints to their sharp quills dragging along the dusty paths. Our guide in fact saw one early morning about 6am at our last forest rest house.

Monkeys
We saw black face, or Langoor monkeys regularly and Rhesus monkeys too.
Crocodiles
We saw both species of crocodile, the Mugger and the Carial. Also water turtles coming up for breaths of fresh air. Our guide said they could remain immersed for up to 4hrs.

Yellow necked Martin
This was a real treat coming across a family of four who came very close as one had crossed the road and the other 3 were on the other side. Our guide told us the yellow necked martin are rarer than tigers and loepards in the Corbett Park.
